If there is one thing I love as much as home decor its travel. If I’m not on a trip you can bet I am planning my next getaway. Something about travel just makes me feel complete. I love exploring each new place and trying my best to experience the true culture. Sure it’s nice to hit the tourist spots and check them off the bucket list but some of my favorite memories come from the hidden gem places where the locals hang.
One thing that can be less than fun for some people is flying. I personally love flying most of the time. But I think that is due in part to the tricks of travel I have picked up over the years. So I decided to compile a little list of my favorite things to make air travel more comfortable.
The more you travel the more you realize the importance of a great carry on bag. Most everyone these days has a rolling bag but they are not all created equal. After a few years dragging along a cheap carry on I bought at Walmart I finally took the plunge and bought a better bag. Let me tell you it was worth every penny. After some research I landed on the Away brand larger carry on. Not only does it have four wheels that rotate 360 degrees(let me tell you that makes a HUGE difference) but it also comes with something that is so valuable to all travelers, a built in battery to charge your devices! If you have ever had your flight delayed you know how important it is to have a charged phone, not only to entertain yourself but also to keep in touch with your friends or family who might be awaiting your arrival. Plugs can be sparse at the airport so having another charging option is great. This bag also has a ton of space. No joke I can pack at least a weeks worth of clothes in this bag. Another thing you learn after frequent travel is to never check a bag if you don’t absolutely have to. Not only can it cost you extra in baggage fees but it also cost you time. Traveling with only a carry on allows you to skip the ticketing line and use your mobile boarding pass to head straight to security. You also save time when you arrive not having to wait for your luggage to (hopefully) arrive. I like to hit the ground running when I land so a carry on makes it easier for me to get off the plane and on my way. Plus, you really can’t beat a blush carry on. 🙂
Another thing that is a must have is comfy shoes. Travel days can be long and require lots of walking. Wearing a pair of shoes that you can easily walk in all day makes a huge difference in how you feel when you finally get to your destination. I usually gravitate to two types of shoes, flats or sneakers. Sneakers are great but they don’t always go with every outfit. If you need to head straight from the plane to an event you may want a footwear option that is more stylish than a sneaker. That’s where Rothys come in to the picture. The are just as comfy as a pair of sneakers but have the look of dress shoes. They come in two styles, round or pointy toe. They are made out of recycled bottles which is cool and environmentally friendly. Most importantly they are washable! Since flats aren’t typically worn with socks they can get kinda stinky over time. These shoes have a removable insert that makes it easy to freshen them up in the washing machine or if your in a hotel even wash them in the sink. I have washed my inserts at least 6 times in the last four months since I bought them and they are holding up really well. I would suggest buying a half size up from your normal size if you are ordering the pointy toe version. Unless you have a very narrow foot it can pinch your toes a little if you order your standard size for the pointy toe style. The leopard print is fun and goes with pretty much everything. I love mine so much I’m already planning which color to buy for my second pair.
One thing I have learned is that you never know what the temp is going to be inside the plane or airport. Having a cute comfy cardigan to throw on as an additional layer will make your trip much more comfortable. Plus if you don’t need to wear it then it can double as a pillow. I prefer an oversized longer cardigan. I tend to wear leggings or a dress on flights so a longer oversized cardigan gives more coverage in the back. This Madewell option is on my list to buy next. I love the fact that it has pockets which comes in handy when you are wearing leggings or a dress and need a place to hold your phone.
Loud talkers and crying babies. Seriously that’s the only explanation you need on why these babies are necessary. I have these particular Beats wireless headphones and love them. I like the over the ear type verses the in ear because it seems to block the surrounding noise better. I also find they are more comfortable over long periods of time than the in ear plastic headphones.
A good pair of high waisted leggings are a must have for any woman, especially if you’re in your thirties like me and have had a couple kids. I love high waisted for two reasons, they hold everything in and they cover everything up in the back when you bend over. Plus I feel like a good plain black pair goes with everything and can easily be dressed up or dressed down. When you are traveling out a carry on having pieces that can do double or triple duty is super important. These Zella live in leggings are super soft, not see through, and great quality. They have a very similar cut and feel to Lululemon but without the hefty price tag.
In addition to a good carry on a girl needs a good tote bag. I put my clothing and things I will need when I arrive at my destination in the carry on. A tote bag is for everything else. I don’t have this particular tote(yet) but I do have one that is similar in size and style. What I love about this Madewell tote is the outside pocket. I like to have quick easy access to my phone when I travel since I use a mobile boarding pass. So having a outside pocket so I don’t have to dig is so important. The main pocket is large enough to hold my laptop which is great if I want to do some work during the flight or my layover. Plus it’s blush, and if haven’t noticed by now that’s kind of my color.
After a long day of traveling ,especially if its an overnight flight, you can use some freshening up. A good dry shampoo helps eliminate any excess oil in your hair as well as adds volume to slept on hair. This Kendra dry shampoo is my favorite! I love the smell of it and the fact that it goes on lightly. Unlike some dry shampoos it doesn’t leave white residue on your dark roots.
Air travel can be super drying. Its important to say hydrated and its also important to moisturize your skin. This Bobbi Brown lip tint is dual purpose. It is very hydrating and it adds a little color to your lips. It is a little pricey but mine has lasted a long time and it serves the purpose of two products so I feel it was worth it.
9. Hand cream
Like the lip tint, this hand cream helps your skin stay hydrated. This Neutrogena hand cream is only 2 ounces so its TSA approved. It’s unscented so it won’t irritate sensitive skin. And its inexpensive. I call that a winning combo.
10. TSA Pre
Okay so the last one isn’t a product but a service. I was given TSA Pre and Global Entry as part of one of my credit card benefits. TSA Pre is for domestic travel and Global Entry is for international travel. Even if I wouldn’t have been given the service I still would have paid for it. Yes it is an extra charge but let me tell you why its worth it. The cost for TSA Pre is $85 for 5 years so that breaks down to only $17 a year. Now say you fly twice a year. That breaks down to a little over $8 a trip which is about the cost of a quick lunch. With TSA Pre you get a faster security process. Since you go through a pre screening process when you sign up you don’t have to jump through all the hoops of the regular line. No more taking off your shoes, pulling out your liquids, or removing your laptop. Just set your bags on the belt, walk through the scanner, and off you go. Before my husband also signed up for the service I would usually get through at least 10 minutes quicker than him at busy airports. Like I said I’m all about streamlining my travel and making things quicker. I’m also all about not having to remove my shoes and step on a floor that who knows when it was cleaned last. Yuck.
Added option: Lounge access
If you travel more than a few times a year and have to take flights with connections then having lounge access is a huge help in making your trip more comfortable. You can buy a yearly membership to most airline lounges or there are tons of credit cards with lounge access included in their annual fee. Yes it will cost you a little extra money but the cards usually come with a collection of benefits that help justify the annual fees. Having a less crowded, quieter, cleaner space to sit can really make your time in the airport more bearable. Plus lounges offer free wifi, places to charge up your devices, snacks, and most importantly FREE DRINKS!! American Express’s Platinum card comes with a network of lounges as well as AMEX’s own Centurion Lounges that even feature free mini spa services. I think an express manicure is the perfect way to spend your layover.
